While orthodontic emergencies are rare, we understand how distressing even minor issues can feel. Our team is here to offer fast, compassionate, and effective guidance for both major and minor orthodontic concerns.

Have an Emergency?

For any orthodontic emergency, we recommend texting our practice with photos of the issue. Visuals help us respond quickly and accurately — often saving you a trip to the office. Our team is on call to assess the situation and provide the next best step.

Major Orthodontic Emergencies: What You Need to Know

True orthodontic emergencies are rare, but they require immediate attention. These may include:

• Trauma or injury to the teeth, jaw, or face
• Intense, persistent pain in the mouth or jaw
• Severe swelling or infection of the gums or face
• A broken or severely damaged appliance causing bleeding or breathing issues

What to Do:

1. Contact your general dentist first — they’re equipped to handle urgent dental injuries like fractured or dislodged teeth.
2. Seek emergency medical care (ER or urgent care) if:
   • There is uncontrolled bleeding
   • There’s a facial injury or suspected broken bone
   • You are experiencing intense swelling or signs of infection

Once the immediate issue is resolved, our team at Artemis Smiles Orthodontics will work with you to adjust your orthodontic treatment plan accordingly.

Common Orthodontic Issues & At-Home Fixes

Minor issues may not require immediate in-office care but should still be addressed. Here’s how to handle them at home:

Discomfort After Adjustments

• Mild soreness is normal after getting braces or aligners adjusted.
• Use over-the-counter pain relief (e.g., ibuprofen) and stick to soft foods for 1–2 days.
• Rinsing with warm salt water can also soothe discomfort.

Loose or Detached Brackets

• If a bracket becomes loose but is still attached to the wire, use orthodontic wax to hold it in place.
• If it completely detaches, save the bracket and bring it to your next appointment.
• Call or text us to schedule a repair visit.

Poking or Misplaced Wires

• Use the eraser end of a pencil to gently reposition the wire.
• Apply orthodontic wax to cover sharp ends and prevent irritation.
• Do not cut the wire yourself, as this can lead to accidental swallowing or breathing in the wire.

Lost Elastics or Rubber Bands

• If you’re trained on elastic placement, you may try to reattach it using sterile tweezers.
• If you’re unsure or can’t find the elastic, contact us so we can replace it promptly.

Mouth Sores or Irritation

• Appliances can cause temporary irritation to the cheeks, lips, or tongue.
• Use salt water rinses, orthodontic wax, or topical gels (like Orajel) for relief.
• Let us know if ulcers persist beyond a few days.

Problems with Removable Appliances

• If your retainer, aligner, or other removable appliance is bent or broken, stop wearing it.
• Continued use may worsen the issue or delay treatment.
• Contact us to determine whether it can be repaired or needs replacing.

Quick Tips for Managing Minor Orthodontic Emergencies

• Keep orthodontic wax with you at all times
• Maintain excellent oral hygiene to prevent inflammation or irritation
• Carry a small dental emergency kit with tweezers, floss, wax, and a mirror when traveling
• Notify us promptly of any issues, even if they seem minor
